So when it came to Zenith, one of the things I wanted to build was an undersea creature and a leviathan / kraken style creature that is trying to re-enter the world. I’ve always loved the idea of an ancient creature and a primordial titan who is sleeping, and the imposing threat of him awakening is a challenge for the players to stop.
What types of adventures can you use Ukoth’Tyrell?
The core adventure idea that was behind this primordial titan was giving a creature that had a very HP Lovecraft / Eldritch Horror type feel to it. I wanted a monster that was slumbering and a doomsday cult devoted to his return. Additionally I have a cleric in my party for Kenadyssn, The Forged Warrior, a god devoted to War, Battle, Valor, and Honor.
So I originally wanted to create something that was the polar opposite of Kenadyssn for his faith. So when you stop and look at Kenndyssn and the fact that her portfolio was focused on War, Battle, Valor and Honor, I had to come up with the opposite.
And honestly, there is a lot of mythology that follows the Greek / Rome pantheon, and the idea of the gods and them fighting primordial titans. So I knew I wanted to go with a primordial titan.
And given that the gods of this world are Dragons, I figured a sea monster would be a great similar but still opposites option. And then went with the idea of an Apex predator of the seas would be the opposite of a god who was focused on the honorable elements of battle and war. The idea of an apex predator that just lashes out at anyone in it’s region.
Who is Ukoth’Tyrell?
Ukoth’Tyrell is a primodial titan, a great beast that first existed when the world was young. It was born out of the efforts of the gods to make the world. And as part of it’s creation, the creature plagued the southern seas of the world. And during that age, the beast ruled the seas and took control of the entire region.
But after the human races were created and before the “Great War”, between the gods, the beast known as Ukoth’Tyrell grew in power and began to trying to take control of the seas. It further decided that it felt that it was equal to any god.
Specifically the beast was plaguing a region to the far south, that has long since lost it’s name. And they paired with a great warrior trio who went to fight with the dragon to defeat the creature. Kenadyssn took these warriors to battle the creature and blessed them with weapons and power to hunt the beast.
The three warriors that went on to fight the creature. The names of the warriors have been lost to history. But they are known as:
- Mariner
- Wizard
- Cleric
Upon arriving at the seas, the battle was epic, and lasted for 3 days before it ended. And they defeated the titan driving it back to the ocean depths. Kenadyssn then worked to seal away the great titan behind 5 magic seals, and those seals were designed to keep the beast locked away.
The goal being that the beast would remain their until the end of time, with it’s powers to control and manipulate the tides being siphoned off for the world, creating the currents.
What is Ukoth’Tyrell?
Ukoth’Tyrell is a sea monster, and for me the inspiration was the kraken from Clash of the Titans:
The intention being that this titan should be massive in size, and on par with something a Great Wyrm dragon would battle.
For a physical description, the creature is a massive creates with many eyes all over it’s head, with large claws and massive tentacles that descend beneath the surface of the water. The titan is not only a creature of the sea, but also controls the elements of the seas around it. It can control weather, lightning and the water itself, which makes it very dangerous.
What went wrong?
Where things went wrong was before the trio and the god defeated the titan, Ukoth’Tyrell managed to speak telepathically to the Mariner. The Mariner was promised immortally and power from the titan. And before the creature was seal away, the Mariner was able to sneak away with 5 eyes of the titan, and keep those eyes outside the sealed. From this point the eyes were lost to history.
What are the “Eyes of Ukoth’Tyrell?”
The Eyes of Ukoth’Tyrell are a collection of 5 artifacts, each that look the same. They look like a solid black orb with a yellow iris like color on one side. If a person approaches the eye or provokes it, they can see it move so that the iris is looking at them.
Each of these eyes is directly connected to Ukoth’Tyrell, and empower the titan to sea what is going on in the world, and exert influence on anyone who is close to them.
What does Ukoth’Tyrell wants?
At it’s core, Ukoth’Tyrell wants to awaken and break free of it’s prison, and to do so, the eyes must be returned to the place where the titan is sealed away, and the eyes will allow for an opportunity to open the gate that seals the creature away.
Who is the Lost Horizon?
There is an organization known as the Lost Horizon, and this group is a religious sect that worships the leviathan of Ukoth’Tyrell. They often call him by the other names “Fang of the Sea”, “The Eyes in the Dark”, or “Titan of the Deep.”
Their belief is that the world was abandoned by the god dragons, and was left to titans like Ukoth’Tyrell. They believe that the Titan owns the seas and should be released to take his place as the god of the oceans. They are absolutely a doomsday cult, and one that is filled with fanatics.
These cultists believe that the world belongs to the predators, and the apex predator of Ukoth’Tyrell must be allowed to walk free.
From a stat block perspective, the following are the different kind of “generic” members of the cult.
